Overview of the Event

The 1st Pakistan Food-Nutrition International Summit, held in conjunction with the 9th Pak Pharma & Healthcare Expo, took place on July 10-11, 2019, at the Pak China Friendship Center, Islamabad. The summit brought together leading experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to discuss pressing issues in food security, nutrition, and halal standards. The event featured a series of sessions, panel discussions, and technical presentations aimed at addressing challenges and promoting advancements in the food and nutrition sectors.

Session Details

Inaugural Session The summit commenced with a formal registration and welcome of guests and participants. The session included recitations, the national anthem, and a series of addresses by key figures including Mr. Muhammad Aslam Shaheen, Dr. M. Azeem Khan, Prof. Dr. Rashid Aftab, Prof. Dr. Masood Sadiq Butt, and others. The keynote address by Dr. Saul S. Morris, Director of Programme Services Team at Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, highlighted the importance of food safety and the way forward for developing countries. The Chief Guest, Ali Muhammad Khan, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Pakistan, delivered a significant address. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Rana Awais Khan, Principal Organizer of the Summit, and a group photo session.

Plenary Session The first panel discussion focused on “Food & Nutrition Security, Policies & Strategies to Achieve SDG 02 Zero Hunger.” Chaired by Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, with contributions from panelists including M. Aslam Shaheen, Mr. Javed Malik, Dr. Waseem-ul-Hassan, Dr. Tausif Akhtar Janjua, and Dr. Amir Irshad, the discussion explored strategies and policies necessary to address food security challenges and achieve sustainable development goals.

Technical Session I The session on “Pakistan Halal Standard and Importance of Certifications & Accreditation for Global Market” was chaired by Mr. Ateeq-ur-Rehman and Mr. Hamid K. Lateef. Presentations included discussions on halal standards, accreditation, and the role of various organizations in ensuring compliance and market access.

Technical Session II Focusing on “Food Security and Nutrition Innovations,” this session featured presentations on topics such as food fortification, indigenous fruits, food allergies, and new concepts in food security. The session aimed to address current issues and explore innovative solutions to enhance food security and nutrition in Pakistan.

Special Session I The special session on “Mother and Child Nutrition” emphasized the importance of addressing nutritional needs in these critical demographics. Dr. Hajra Ahmed delivered a special lecture highlighting the often-neglected aspect of mother and child nutrition.

Panel Discussion II The second panel discussion revolved around the “Harmonization and Integration of Food Regulatory Framework.” Chaired by Prof. Dr. Masood Sadiq Butt, the discussion included insights from various experts on the need for a cohesive regulatory framework to ensure food safety and quality.

Technical Sessions III & IV These sessions covered a range of topics including food and nutrition research, innovation, and commercialization. Presentations addressed issues such as nutraceuticals, food fortification, and challenges in the food industry. The sessions aimed to present new research findings and discuss practical applications in the food sector.

Special Session II “Food Safety & Nutrition; Cooking Perspectives” featured Chef Raees, who provided insights into the intersection of food safety, nutrition, and cooking practices.

Technical Session VI The final technical session addressed advancements in probiotics, protein hydrolysates, and other nutritional topics. The session highlighted research on the health benefits of various food components and their implications for disease management and nutrition.

Summary

The summit successfully brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss and address critical issues in food security, nutrition, and halal standards. The sessions provided valuable insights into current challenges and future directions, with a strong emphasis on research, innovation, and policy development.
